Looking to Adopt a Small Doggy?
Welcoming a new small doggy into your home is an incredibly rewarding experience. However, adopting a rescue pet is a lifetime commitment. We are here to guide you through the responsible adoption process and connect you with ethical, verified organizations.
Referral Platform Disclosure: Small Dog Rescue South Africa is a guidance and referral platform. Adoption, surrender, screening and placement decisions are managed by the individual rescue organisation responsible for each application.
The Responsible Adoption Process
Ethical small dog rescues do not operate on a "first-come, first-served" basis. Instead, they carefully screen applicants to ensure that each little one goes to a safe, permanent, and loving home that matches their unique personality and breed requirements.
When you apply to adopt through one of our verified partners, you can expect the following professional steps:
- Application Form: You will complete a detailed questionnaire about your family, home, daily schedule, other pets, and veterinarian details.
- Telephonic Interview: A rescue coordinator will call you to discuss your application, understand your lifestyle, and match you with a suitable doggy.
- Physical Home Check: A volunteer will visit your home to inspect the safety of your property. They check wall heights, secure gates, pool safety, and ensure there are no small gaps where a tiny dog could escape.
- Veterinary Reference: The rescue will contact your current vet to confirm that your existing pets are sterilised, fully vaccinated, and well cared for.
- Adoption Fee & Contract: Once approved, you will sign a legal adoption contract and pay an adoption fee. This fee goes directly toward vetting expenses (sterilisation, microchipping, and vaccinations).
Home Check Guidelines for Small Dogs
Small dogs have very different safety requirements compared to larger breeds. Before applying, please ensure your home meets the following criteria:
- Fencing & Gates: Boundaries must be fully enclosed with secure walls or fences. Small breed rescue organizations typically require a minimum wall height of 1.2 to 1.8 meters, depending on the breed and site.
- Tiny Gaps: Small dogs—especially Yorkies, Chihuahuas, and puppies—can slip through security gate bars, palisades, or gaps under gates. You may need to install clear mesh or weld-mesh along fences and gates.
- Swimming Pools: Open pools are a major hazard for small dogs, who can easily drown if they fall in and cannot get out. Pools must be fenced off, netted, or have a secure safety cover.
- Indoor Living: Small toy breeds are companion animals. They do not have the coat or body mass to tolerate South African weather extremes. Adopters must agree that the dog will sleep indoors.
Breed-Specific Considerations
While all small dogs are adorable, different breeds have highly specific care, grooming, and medical needs:
- Yorkshire & Biewer Terriers: Yorkies have hair instead of fur, which requires regular daily brushing and professional grooming every 4–6 weeks. They are also prone to dental issues and luxating patellas.
- Maltese: Maltese dogs require consistent grooming to prevent painful coat matting. They are highly social and can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for long periods.
- French Bulldogs & Boston Terriers: As brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds, they are sensitive to heatstroke and airway issues. They have specific medical needs that can lead to high veterinary bills.
- Chihuahuas & Toy Mixes: Often highly loyal but can be fragile. They may not be suitable for homes with very active toddlers or large, boisterous dogs.

Adoption FAQ
How much are the adoption fees?
Adoption fees generally range between R1,200 and R2,500 depending on the rescue and the specific vetting required. These fees do not generate a profit; they help cover a fraction of the cost of sterilisation, vaccines, microchipping, deworming, and any necessary veterinary treatment the dog received while in rescue care.
Can I adopt a small dog if I live in an apartment?
Yes, many small dogs thrive in apartments, provided they get daily walks, mental stimulation, and company. However, the rescue will check your body corporate rules regarding pets (e.g., written permission is required) and ensure the balcony is safe (no wide railings where a toy dog could slip through).
How long does the adoption process take?
The process typically takes 5 to 10 working days. This timeline depends on how quickly your references respond, the availability of home checkers in your area, and matching the right dog to your home. Rescues are run by volunteers, so please be patient as they work to save lives.
Can I adopt a dog from another province?
Some of our partner rescues allow inter-province adoptions if you are willing to travel to meet the dog and cover transport costs. However, a local home check is still mandatory, and some breed-specific rescues prefer local placements to simplify post-adoption follow-ups.
